Americans polled by TIME magazine show strong support for a guest-worker program and a process for undocumented workers to become citizens, but they take a tough stance on securing the borders. And most do not want illegal immigrants to have access to health care, public education or driver's licenses.

Sounds reasonable to me. Most American realize the value of Mexican labor provides to this country despite what most anti-immigrationist think.

It's no different from this poll.

http://www.fairus.org/site/PageServer?pagename=research_researchd74c

Asked whether they would favor "allowing illegal immigrants already working in the United States to register as guest workers for a fixed period of time, so that the government could keep track of them," 73% said they "favor"; 23% said "oppose"; 3% don't know.

The more I think about it, the more I agree with the basics of the poll...guest worker, no taxpayer support of medical, etc.

The number one problem to fix is the border. Before anything.

Then we have to deal with the 12+ million illegals. Deportation would be a CFG. Between the lawyers and the government bureaucracy it would be FUBAR in nothing flat.

After securing the border we have all illegals register and receive a tamper-proof new green card. No company can hire or no guest worker can work without it. If caught working without it the worker is deported and the company is heavily fined. Additionally the company provides health insurance.

It is the only realistic way to deal with this mess which has grown up while our politicians and enforcers buried their heads in the sand.

"Only 47% of those polled say they support the tougher measure backed by some House conservatives, deporting all illegal immigrants back to their home countries."

I love the way Time slants the news. "Only 47% is almost a majority." If it were 12%, I could see saying "only 12%."

Just remember, the basic difference between journalists and prostitutes is that prostitutes have higher ethical standards.

Let's find out how many FReepers bought that rag-mag. How many take the many rag newpapers? How many support the movie industry? I'll take it a step further. I haven't bought a Tyson product since Bubba was elected. How many are willing to take a day off work & protest this amnesty crapola?

Possibilities:

-Time just proved they have the most uninteligent readers

-The poll is WAY skewed.

-The question reported is the the ACTUAL QUESTION asked.

The poll has zero credibility if they said convertabilty to citizenship did not matter.

I no longer believe anything Time publishes. Last week's global warming tripe is typical.

Therefore it is fortunate that I quit subscribing to Time many years ago. Saves a lot of anger and stress.

Stress causes me to have alopecia ariata. Can anyone top that?

BS...they polled current Time subscribers maybe!

Any active duty or recently retired folks remember how Time, SI, etc were supplied free to the military? Once the obvious brainwashing attempt was discovered, it was quietly discontinued, although that took a few years. Probably once they figured out their efforts were NOT causing massive military Dumocrat conversions.

Or maybe that was when the subscriptions rates began to tank.

How did they twist the wording of the questions to get the results they wanted with this poll?

In the telephone survey of 1004 adults, conducted Wednesday and Thursday, 79% say they favor a guest worker program that would allow illegal immigrants to remain in the U.S. for a fixed period of time — the main provision of the bill proposed by Senators John McCain and Edward Kennedy that is now under fierce debate in Congress. Only 47% of those polled say they support the tougher measure backed by some House conservatives, deporting all illegal immigrants back to their home countries.

OK, now lets have a poll of Americans taken who aren't "Mexican-American".....

I wonder what percentage are willing to give their, or their children's jobs to a guest worker?

I don't believe this poll for a minute. Most Americans think this "guestworker/amnesty" sham applies only to jobs low skilled Mexicans would take but it doesn't. It would allow ANY foreigner, from ANY country, to come in and take ANY job here in America if they underbid the American worker. This "guestworker" bill would wipe out the American middle class and keep an unending supply of cheap labor for corporate America. Nothing is more "permanent" than a so-called "guestworker."
