Actually, it's a reference to an old political movement, the Know-Nothings: "The Know-Nothing movement was a nativist American political movement of the 1850s. It grew up as a popular reaction to fears that corruption was overcoming the major cities because of the political activity of Irish Catholic immigrants."

Snow's use of the term is appropriate in context.

Look at it from a historical perspective. Not much different than calling someone a democrat or republican.

What was the name of a large, popular political party in the mid-1800's? It had legs 'til the Civil War broke out, and a bunch of Irish made the ultimate sacrifice for the North.
