Provocative? Defending your country IN your country? The flag was burned AFTER it was used to insult America. The guys should have driven the point home with a sound beating of these third-world hell hole chavunist jackasses.
You do not need to burn a flag to protect your country. 30,000 more border patrol agents would be a lot more effective than children in schools across America burning flags.
Do you also applaud Palestinians, Pakistanis, etc (whoever is angry with us at the moment) who burn our flag? Or do you look at them as performing an immature act? I do the latter, and that is why I would never burn a Mexican flag nor support anyone who did. I could just as easily fold it up and put it in a drawer out of sight and not look like an animal.

They didn't burn any old flag. They burned the one that was hoisted up the flag pole at a US public school. I think it was a fine way to respond to the symbolic attack representing the real attack - the Mexican colonization of the US.

I'm going to assume that you're rather young.
That said, flying a flag in a country that is not yours, USED TO BE, back when we were still (semi-)sane, was deemed an act of war.

"Do you also applaud Palestinians, Pakistanis, etc (whoever is angry with us at the moment) who burn our flag?" Those who place the sanctity of a foreign flag hoisted upon our soil as equal to that of our own are the problem.

You really don't see the difference here? Or perhaps you enjoy striking postures. In any event Americans welcome people to this country pretty much as a facet of the culture. It's always been that way.
But when a bunch third world punks (or anyone for that matter)hoists any banner above the American flag then they are getting on their knees and begging for it.
When a foreign flag is raised above mine in my own nation even as the people of that nation spit on me and mine, then they are getting on their knees and begging for it
That said, to place me in the same category as the Palis who wouldn't even exist if you took the HATE out of them, who LITERALLY exist ONLY because they hate is the sort of thing a person advances when they are trying to bludgeon rather than argue.
This isn't about the burning of a flag as some sort of generically evil deed rather, it is about the TOTAL disrespect for America by scum and their supporters who are stealing from America with their presence and claiming moral and racial superiority even as they do it.
You better learn when to take your hands out of your pockets, my friend, because in life, when you DON'T know you increase the danger to all that you hold dear.
It's a tricky thing to know but you BETTER know.

My flag boy and your flag boy
Sittin' by the fire
My flag boy said to your flag boy
"I'm gonna set your flag on fire"
Territory reclaimed. Banner burned. It's as old as time.
