The work is interesting, though the write up is nauseating. Of course the damn thing doesn't violate Newton's Third Law.
Actually, it sounds more like an example of a rotational Born-Oppenheimer effect. The molecule is in such a high rotational state, the surrounding water molecules simply see an average over the rotational wavefunction.
To: The_Victor
The molecule heated up to 8,000 degrees Fahrenheit (4,427 Celsius) and started spinning at a furious 270 trillion rotations per minute.Clockwise or counterclockwise???

The molecule's activity also runs against Newton's third law of motion, which states that for every action there is an equal, but opposite, reaction. That's a statement of the conservation of momentum. If this violates momentum conservation, the article doesn't say how.
To: Physicist
That's a statement of the conservation of momentum. If this violates momentum conservation, the article doesn't say how. I found that rather suspicious too, but I was sure my mechanical engineering brain attempting to imagine this was just missing some mysterious subatomic/quantum effect.

Clockwise or counter-clockwise???Depends. North or south hemisphere?

Northern hemisphere, I assume...
I don't know anyplace south of the equator where they can measure this stuff.
Maybe Australia or New Zealand, perhaps...
but the Aussies and Kiwis are upside down...
I'd think that'd make the water spill out of the beaker.

Scientists have found a molecule that can spin freely in liquid, clearing out water like a person swinging suitcases would clear a crowded room. I am speechless at how bad this analogy is....

This proves that zaps are stranger than friction.

I am speechless at how bad this analogy is.... I think ..."like a person swinging angry wet cats on bungi cords in a crowded vet clinic" would have been no worse, and a lot more interesting. You know, something people could relate to.
