WASHINGTON, March 27 — With Republicans deeply divided, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted on Monday to legalize the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants and ultimately to grant them citizenship, provided that they hold jobs, pass criminal background checks, learn English and pay fines and back taxes.

Only 4 of the 10 Republicans on the committee supported the bill. They were the committee chairman, Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, and Senators Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Mike DeWine of Ohio and Sam Brownback of Kansas. All eight Democrats on the committee voted in favor of the legislation.

The rift among Republicans on the committee reflects the deep divisions in the party...

The Senate Committee bill is going nowhere.

The House version is too different to be reconciled.

The status quo will remain

Betrayed by members of our own Party. Let's remember this in November.

All eight Democrats on the committee voted in favor of the legislation

Did you ever see the 1993 remake of The Invasion of the Body Snatchers? There's a scene where Meg Tilley tells the last guy, "Where you going to run? What are you going to do? Who you gonna run to? Cause there's nobody like you left." One thing the Rats have done by running absurdly left is leave the middle wide open. Hacked about the Republicans? Sitting home in November? All of the Rats support this, and more. So, where you gonna run? Who you gonna run to?

...provided that they hold jobs, pass criminal background checks, learn English and pay fines and back taxes.

And therein lies the problem: enforcement. Who, exactly, will be responsible for verifying that José Jímenez showed up for work last week; or whether he has a criminal record in Juarez, whether he is properly enrolled in an "English-as-a-second-language" course, or whether he's taking cash in lieu of company checks? The Federal Government? Yeah, right. The states? Uh huh. Now multiply that task by 10 million...

Citizenship is not a right: it is a privilege. Those who claim the shelter of our Constitution must accept the responsibilities of citizenship in order for their rights to be guaranteed. Responsibility without rights may be tyranny, but rights without responsibility is anarchy and that - and worse - is what we have invited by our open border policy.

This bill grants In-State Tuition to Illegal Aliens and has portability. Even in MA this idea was defeated 4-1!

President Bush kept Spector from losing in the primary. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

In fairness to Dubya, the most important thing to him with respect to the Judiciary Committee was getting his Supreme Court nominations. And he got two very good ones in Roberts and Alito. There are other reasons to pillory Spector, and to get Dubya for supporting him, but getting two young, brilliant, conservative justices on the Court is something that will still matter decades from now.

"President Bush kept Spector from losing in the primary."

And in return Spector has helped Bush with his SC appointments, and now with his immigrant amnesty program.

Any pubbie chairing the senate judiciary committee would have helped the president with those nominations. It didn't have to be Specter. However, any pubbie wouldn't have helped the president with this amnesty bill. With Specter, we lose.

That's a terrific point. Even in the Heart of Darkness (sorry, massgopguy - I lived there once, too) such insanity was rejected as beyond the pale. This country was built by immigrants - LEGAL ones. Now, their children and grandchildren are being asked to support people who don't play by the rules, don't pay taxes, and don't pay insurance. Instead, American citizens are being asked to pick up the tab. Oh - and they're called "racists" and "bigots" and "xenophobes" if they refuse.

I understand that at some point we are probably going to have to accept some number of the "undocumented" as permanent residents because the cost of locating and deporting all of them is prohibitive. But it's far too early to surrender now - and just plain insane to start rewarding the rampant illegality that surrounds us.

This immigration bill will be THE REASON that Republicans loose the House and the Senate this year. I am sorry to see the weaklings have not dealt with the open border problem and decided to welcome the criminals in!

This is a perfect example of what happens when a law or rule is not enforced!

That's true. The problem is that at the time Bush had to make the decision whether or not to back Spector, he could not have known he'd have the margin he currently has in the Senate. Almost all those elections broke the right way, with the result being that we have a pretty good GOP majority.

As you said "any pubbie chairing the Judiciary Committee" would have done the same thing, and I agree. The point of Bush backing Spector wasn't to make him the chair. It was to ensure that it would be a Republican, not a Democrat, chairing that committee. Better a judiciary committee chaired by Spector than by Biden, eh? And if some of those elections had gone the otherway, Bush's decision to back Spector might have been the margin we needed to keep a bare majority.

Personally, I didn't think the pubbies were in any danger of losing control of the senate. I don't recall any indicators that they were. Nevertheless I do recognize that your explanation is the official excuse for interfering in a state primary. I'm sorry that it worked.

It was that act of stupidity that did it for me. Haven't given a dime to the Republican Party since...not that they've noticed it on their balance sheets.
