Slain Minister's Wife to Be Charged With Murder Friday, March 24, 2006 MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The wife of a Tennessee pastor found shot dead in his house Wednesday will face first-degree murder charges, authorities announced Friday.

Mary Winklerwas found Thursday night with the couple's three daughters in Orange Beach, Ala., about 400 miles south of their home in Selmer.

Investigators with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said she was interviewed during the night and the charges were being prepared.

"We've interviewed her and she was cooperative," said Jennifer Johnson of the TBI, adding that once a warrant with the charges was drawn up, extradition proceedings would begin to have her returned to Tennessee.

Matthew Winkler was found shot to death in the bedroom of his parsonage Wednesday by church members who began searching for him after he failed to show up at an evening event at Selmer's Church of Christ.

Police said there were no signs of forced entry, but Winkler's wife and children — Breanna, 1; Mary Alice, 6; and Patricia, 8 — were gone.

I misunderstood what you were talking about. I just skimmed a lot of the posts and was confused. Sorry.

No problem.

It also becomes confusing when Nutballs call themselves names similiar to legitimate churches. For example Fred Phelps and his pretense of being Baptist. Uninitiated people see his church named "Baptist" and think he is associated with that fine denomination rather than being a complete crackpot.

LoL, Ok, so I was generalizing about our core beliefs..there are a lot of differences... But what I meant was that if you believe the church of Christ is a cult you would have to believe the Baptist are too.

Yes, the CoC does serve the Lord's Supper (communion) every Sunday. I am no expert on Baptist beliefs, but this is what I think other differences are. The CoC believes you have to be baptized to be added to the church, for remmission of sins and to be saved (Mark 15:15-16). Some branches of the Baptist church may also believe this (maybe Missionary Baptists?), but I'm not sure the standard Southern Baptists do. Some Baptists believe the Calvinistic doctrine "once saved always saved." They don't believe a christian can stray if they truly have accepted Christ. And of course the use of instrumental music in worship.

I agree. And what is equally frustrating are those who have had a bad experience with one or two fanatical church members (regardless of the church) and then slam an entire faith because of that experience. We shouldn't paint with such a broad brush.

I am a member of the church of Christ.

I believe there is more than one "Church of Christ", just as there is more than one "Church of God".

Wish the media would be more careful to identify which variety of "Church of Christ" this was.

There is only one church of Christ. There are denominations that include "Church of Christ" in their name, but that doesn't make them the church we read about in the Bible.

He was late for Wed evening Bible study.

Baptists don't believe that you have to be baptized or a church member to be saved. Salvation is simply "believing" and accepting Christ as Savior. Baptism is a "statement" to the world of a person's salvation. Church membership sometimes goes with baptism, but not always -- depends on the individual church.

"Once saved, always saved" = "eternal security of the believer". This is Calvin's "Perseverence of the saints" -- the "P" in TULIP. Baptists DON'T believe a Christian can't stray; everyone strays -- all are human. They do believe that, if truly saved, a Christian doesn't lose salvation.

Instrumental music in worship -- definitely "yes" for us Baptists.

What I noticed on the radio this a.m. is that 'the church' is focused on forgiving Mary. As I said earlier in this thread, you can do about what you want as long as you stand up in front of the congregation and 'repent' (as defined above) you will be forgiven. This confirms the perspective that I had presented earlier.

The result of this practice is that serious issues (like Mary obviously had) go unrecognized and unaddressed while everyone testifies to 'what a wonderful family' they were.

These people must be blind because things like this do not happen in a vacuum. Unfortunately, the Western Church has become so feminized that it is unacceptable to confront and address sin in the body. This murder is evidence of that weakness.

OK. When you and others said that Sharyn Everitt had only been neighbors with the Winklers a few days when the dog incident happened, I thought you meant that the Everitts had just moved into the neighborhood, not the Winklers.

I found the Rita Cosby transcript to clear things up, because I had read another poster elsewhere saying Everitt was a next-door neighbor, which didn't seem possible with their street numbers on opposite sides of the street.

I don't know, I haven't heard Everitt speak, but it seems to me that she is *embellishing* now and has added the "shoot the dog" part onto her earlier story.

The reason I say that is because the "storming down the street the day Matthew's body was found" statement she made earlier has also changed markedly.

Now she says she hadn't seen Mary Winkler since Tuesday afternoon, simply "driving" down the street towards the school, about the time to pick up the girls.

Big difference! Some people want to insert themselves into a public "event" like this and I'm thinking she's one of them. Not up to PK level yet, but a close second.

~~~~~
[From the transcript - Rita Cosby - Live & Direct - MSNBC - Mon., 3-27-06]
SHARON EVERITT, NEIGHBOR OF WINKLERS: Well, we just met him whenever he moved into the home. He‘d lived here maybe three or four days. And I suppose, you know, from what I hear, that we‘re about the only people that ever saw him without his preacher clothes on, or his preacher hat, however you like to say that. But we found him to be a pretty direct or even aggressive individual. And that‘s not just what I think, but a different circumstance that my husband said exactly the same thing.
COSBY: And Sharon, if you can get back to the other part of the rumor
we‘re losing you a little bit on the cell phone there.
EVERITT: OK.
COSBY: But if you can tell us again-you know, you said that he was, what, aggressive and confrontational?
EVERITT: Yes, I did.
COSBY: And how so?
EVERITT: Well, we have a dog and the dog was out playing with the children one day, and he stopped the children. And he told the children that if we didn‘t keep the dog in the house that he would shoot the dog. And...
COSBY: Wait a minute. He said he would shoot the dog?
EVERITT: Yes, he did.
COSBY: And when you found out that this man was a minister, how did you react?
EVERITT: Well, I knew he was a minister. And so immediately, I told my child that surely he was mistaken. And so I went over to the house and told him, you know, that the children had told me that he had said this. And he said, Yes, you know, I have small children, and I don‘t want dogs running around. And I said, Well, my dogs don‘t run around. I said, Sometimes the children let him out in the front yard. We have six little children.
COSBY: You know, and Sharon, speaking of dogs, did you hear anything
I understand that the home has a dog, their home, the Winklers‘ home.
And did anybody hear any gunshots or any sounds that day?
EVERITT: Well, no, we didn‘t hear any gunshots, but starting Wednesday morning, the dog barked all day long and into the night.
COSBY: And when was the last time you saw Mary Winkler, the wife?
EVERITT: I saw her Tuesday afternoon, sometime (INAUDIBLE) She left her home and went down towards the school, I guess to pick up the children. I don‘t know if at that point, she left the state or-I never saw her come back but (INAUDIBLE)
COSBY: Well, Sharon Everitt, we thank you very much. And again apologize, everybody. She‘s obviously on a cell phone that‘s breaking up a little bit. But some interesting developments, saying that he threatened, I guess, the neighbor‘s dog and threatened to shoot the neighbor‘s dog, which is interesting for a preacher, maybe gives some insight into the family. Thank you very much.
Exactly. Any time I hear someone's view of religion I try and remember that it is just their opinion and not necessarily what is really taught by any denomination.
Now he is also saying many things/stresses may bring a person to a breaking point. She does not remember events of that day clearly.
