I think McCain & Co were trying to get the FEC to implement the proposed new draconian anti-free speech regulations under the existing McCain-Feingold Act. No new laws or signatures required. In fact, they've used procedural wrangling to block any new laws that would've prohibited the new infringements. Someone on high needs to step forward and declare this whole shebang unconstitutional. Time to force a constitutional crisis!

When the Free Republic server went down this morning, it was the first time in my 8 years of freeping that I thought it might actually be due to some political pressure or perhaps as a form of protest due to this particular thread.

Thanks, Susannah for your post that points out one of the mirror sites. It was one of only 2 hits on Google for "Freerepublic.com is down" -- and that was the first time I've felt it necessary to go elsewhere to post political commentary.

Keep up the good work, both of you.

"Oh, Susannah, please don't cry for me... for I'm off to Free Republic with a banjo on my knee."

I come from Alabama with my banjo on my knee;
I'm goin' to Free Republic my true love for to see.
It rained all night the day I left,
the weather it was dry;
The sun so hot I froze to death,
Susanna don't you cry.

Oh! Susanna, don't you cry for me;
I come from Alabama,
with my banjo on my knee.

I had a dream the other night,
When everything was still;
I thought I saw Susanna dear,
A-coming down the hill.
The buckwheat cake was in her mouth,
The tear was in her eye,
Said I, I'm coming from the south,
Susanna don't you cry.

Oh! Susanna, don't you cry for me;
I come from Alabama,
with my banjo on my knee.

I soon will be in New Orleans,
And then I'll look all 'round,
And when I find Susanna,
I'll fall upon the ground.
But if I do not find her,
This darkey'll surely die,
And when I'm dead and buried,
Susanna don't you cry.

Oh! Susanna, don't you cry for me;
I'm off to Free Republic with a banjo on my knee.

When freerepublic.com is down, for whatever reason, head to the following yahoo group where freepers communicate:

There seems to be lot of sidestepping of the constitution these days. IMO Executive orders are another tool used for this purpose. Anyways it seems that maybe all the noise that you made scared the FEC a little bit. At least if the Washington post article from the other day is correct. They will try again later. They always do. Thanks for your reply.

This song was not written about political speech, but I think it applies and would be a good anthem for the cause of free speech right now.
You can listen to Shut Me Out..(I typed Shut Me UP...LOL that's the opposite of what we want LOL)

Shut Me Out by Kutless

Tell me something I don't already know
I know that you can't stand these things I'm preaching in the streets
But how can I contain the truth I hold inside
With all the hurting people that I see

So I don't mind putting up with you
And all the things you say
I'm not about to stop
Or even change my ways

There's nothing you can say
That will take me away from this life
There's nothing you can do
To shut me up when I'm speaking the truth

You may not like all I have to say
But you can't prove that everything is filled with empty words
I know my life and inside how I've changed
A testimony to the truth I speak

So I don't mind putting up with you
And all the things you say
I'm not about to stop
Or even change my ways

There's nothing you can say
That will take me away from this life
There's nothing you can do
To shut me off, to shut me out when I'm speaking the truth

There's nothing you can say
That will take me away from this life
There's nothing you can do
To shut me up when I'm speaking the truth
There's nothing you can say
That will take me away from this life
There's nothing you can do
To shut me off, to shut me out when I'm speaking the truth
