It's a myth. Submarines are as easy to find as any other ship.

Well, OK, until they go underwater. There is that...

The new diesels are scary-quiet. They don't have the legs of the nukes but they don't need them. On the surface or snorkeling they put out a hellacious racket but on battery you might just as well forget it.

What exactly is their range without refueling? 100's or 1,000's of miles?

I've read that the fuel cell versions, which do not use combustion, are the quietest of all and can travel @ 18 knots plus. Don't know about their range however.

I have heard that Iran has three diesel-electric subs. Anyone know their history and what we plan to do about them when push comes to shove.

I have always been intrigued as to where these subs were when TWA 800 went down off Long Island. ery easy to pop us, launch a Stinger-style SAM and disappear.
