Chuck D has already conceded that rap isn't singing.

I would have to agree with Chuck D, who comes from the Old Skool of rap.

Holy cow! Grace Slick has put on some serious weight. Age and drug usage hasn't been too kind to her at all. She looks like a 500-pound version of Susan Powter.

Rap finally killed soul, after funk and disco beat it nearly to death. It also seems to me that grunge killed the musicality of rock. This is my theory of rock's history, anyway. Rock'n'roll, as it developed in the 50s, was a musical rebellion against the saccharine pop music of the time, the femininized male voices, the pretentious, pseudo arty lyrics. Similarly, punk and new wave of the 70s were a rebellion against the pretentiousness of art rock of the late 60s and 70s. Finally, forced to listen at one time to my daughter's Green Day collection while driving somehwere, I noticed the studied (I guess) anti-musicality of the group. No melody, no attempt to sing or play in a way that makes musical sense, it's pure rebellion against listener's expectation of music.

All of that has driven me back to country and bluegrass (the latter of which I used to hate, and still can't take more than small amounts at a time), and of course oldies but goodies. The death of soul is further illustrated by the relative successes of so-so comeback albums in recent times by the likes of Solomon Burke, Wilson Pickett, Al Green and even the once great Howard Tate. If there is something comparable to those guys in their prime (or even on those recent albums), I'd like to hear it.
