hello, I think that an eye for an eye etc in a very literal sense is pretty scary and unfortunately that's the way alot of people take it...........
But from what I've learned from my studies of scripture (and I've only been a Christian for 2 1/2 years) is this:
And eye for an eye means that unjust and harsh penalties that do not fit the crime are against the law. For instance, if a man causes another man to lose his eye (for instance) the man is entitled to fare compensation. The victim cannot go slaughter the other persons family. It all about making the punishment fit the crime.
What do you think? Is that what you've come to understand it to mean? Also, although Jesus was the sacrifice that fulfilled the requirement for sin sacrifice, he stated that he did not come to change or abolish the law but uphold it.
Matthew is an inspirational book. My favorite(s) are Romans and Ephesians right now.
