My (now deceased father) in law, went ashore in the first wave. He was 15 years of age at the time. He saved his battle map, apparently the only guy to do so.
It's now aboard the Helicopter Carrier Iwo Jima.
A few years before he died, I got him an M1 (Grand Rifle), so he could show off his shooting skills even at 69 years. Hella of a guy.
