GOP petrified by ports, Iraq and corruption [Russert Alert]
MSNBC ^ | Fri Mar 10 | Interview

Posted on 03/10/2006 10:32:07 AM PST by ncountylee

MSNBC: Tim, how much was the White House involved in the Dubai port deal pullout? Who made this happen?

Russert: The White House was deeply involved. What happened was the Republicans, particularly in the House, just said, “No.” And the White House came back and said, “No, no. We’re asking you to do this. Give us a 45 day review and then some of you may vote for it but we’ll have enough votes to override a veto.” And they said, “No. We’re blocking this deal now. Our constituents are outraged.”

Then Republicans in the Senate and the White House went back to the company and said this is not going to happen. And the leaders in Dubai said, “You know we could go to the brink on this thing and cause a real showdown, or we could pull back gracefully.” And they decided to cut their losses.

MSNBC: With the Dubai company's decision to sell its rights to a “United States entity,” do you think the turmoil surrounding this issue will be quieting down now or will it continue?

Russert: It all depends on what they mean by “U.S. entity.” The Democrats will watch that very carefully to make sure it is a truly independent company.

But the political fallout will continue for some time. Republicans are petrified. They believe that eight months from now they could lose control of Congress.

"But the political fallout will continue for some time."

Luckily the Dems are viewed even more unfavorably than the GOP.

Yes we must preserve the fragile alliance of erstwhile Perotistas and thinking Republicans. This is the downside to Reagan's coalition.

The Republicans don't deserve to get re-elected. We won the majority in both the House and Senate, a 2-term Republican president, and they are all fighting each other to see who can act more like big-government, free immigration liberals.

It's easy to understand why voters would think "if we're going to have Democratic policies regardless, might as well elect real Democrats."

Well yeah, I would say they look like a bunch of turds after this week.

Ironically, in the long run, it will be their (percieved) "polically advantagous" oppostiion that will end up hurting them the most.

Has Tim Russert ever been in touch with the pulse of America?

Has Tim ever been concerned with the GOP's surviving a crisis?

Didn't think so.

And by Perotista I mean high school dropout isolationist double widers. Can you tell I'm bitter?

Republicans are not petrified about this or any other issue, including losing control of Congress. Despite the cheerleading and blatant bias of the MSM, the RATS will not take either chamber in November.

People who are petrified work for the New York Times and the Washington Post. It's called pink slips.

Tactics trump policy every single time. All politics is local. If you don't want to spend 2007 watching impeachment hearings, and you understand that in this political environment where the power of incumbency overwhelms all else and renders meaningless anything one could ever gain from any sort of defeat, then you need to volunteer your time and maybe a few dollars in the cause of GOP candidates in vulnerable districts.

Uh, Russert, didn't you notice the absolute hysteria coming from Schumer, Clinton, Reid and Pelosi? Nice cherry picking there, Timmy.

They should be petrified.

If a survey asked me if I was satisfied with Pres. Bush and/ or Congress, my honest answer would be 'no'.

ITOH that doesn't mean that I would vote for Hillary, Kerry, Gore or any of the other libs.

My dissatisfaction is over the Southern border, illegal aliens, ports deal, SS reform, tax reform, general lack of insight, spine in dealing with libs, Country.

I think Russert nailed it. Everyone I've talked to in my customer list in past three weeks has been opposed. GOP House members would have had to be deaf to not hear it.
