Rumors fly about Harris' faltering Senate campaign after Cheney fails to mention her
The Sarasota Sun-Sentinal ^ | March 7, 2006 | Anthony Man

The political buzz among several of those at Vice President Dick Cheney's fund-raiser for U.S. Rep. Clay Shaw R-Fort Lauderdale, was more about how U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris' Senate campaign may be unraveling.

Cheney even provided some fuel when he said he was looking forward to swearing in a Republican replacement for Democratic U.S. Senator Bill Nelson -- but didn't mention Harris by name.

If Harris doesn't run, the biggest potential candidate is Gov. Jeb Bush.

Well that explains everything. Keep it in the family. Isn't that "cronyism"? Jeb Bush gets into the Senate ... then 4 years later ... another Bush in the White House.

Besides, maybe Katherine Harris is a "conservative" "fringer". The Bush's hate that ...

I'm not so sure. Who was the last senator elected president? The public seems to dislike elevating senators, we prefer governors.

It could turn out to be good news (Harris seeks reelection to the House), but it's bad news right now.

Correct me if I am wrong, no one but Harris has declared. We're well into March. I suppose JEB! could make a credible last-minute entry, but I'm not sure who else could.

The real bad news in FL is the two-man GOP race for the gubernatorial nomination. I am still shocked a real conservative did not jump in that race, it would have been an easy win (and a possible stepping stone toward an eventual White House run).

This looks like a subtle signal from the White House.

I don't get a vote in this election but I sure do wish Jeb Bush would change his mind and run for that Senate seat. I would think he could handily beat Nelson.

IIRC names had to be in by Feb. 13th in order to get on the ballott.

Let's not pull a Lautenberg here folks.

The filing deadline for federal candidates in Florida is May 12, and the primary is on September 6. There's still plenty of time for a candidate to step in if Harris chooses to run for reelection.

Oh, come on. She is not a "fringer". I'm down here in Florida, and I'm voting for Harris...if she drops out, I'll vote for the Republican candidate...Jeb has been a GREAT governor for eight years.

Right now he's in his last term, and he's STILL PUSHING for a tax cut for homeowners. He's a good man, and the Senate would be helped by his presence.

Who was the last senator elected president?

Last sitting Senator elected was John Kennedy, 1960. Before that, Warren Harding in 1922, I think.

Does that mean we're due for another?

But you need to differentiate between Senators-only like JFK, McLame, or HRC and ex-governors who became Senators like George Allen and hopefully Jeb.

Does that mean we're due for another [sitting Senator to be elected President]?

I can tell you my early support is going to George Allen, Senator from Virginia. Though he is currently a legislator, he ALSO used to be the governor of his state, so he does have executive experience.

I'm just glad we weren't "due" in 2004. Can you imagine seeing "President John Kerry" on the tube every night? I shudder at the thought.
