MASH (the film) benefited from its era and its style, and from the cult of personality around Robert Altman.

I was at a video industry trade show around 2002 or so, where Altman was on a panel, and before it started I turned to a friend and said 'It will only take him three questions before he dovetails his answer into 'the suits never made me do it my way' act.

Lame.

There are a lot of "comedies" from that era that were not funny. And Altman's been milking the "success" of that movie for years. It goes to show that Hollywood hasn't learned that honoring a poltical statement isn't usually a good long-term plan.
