Immediately after President chose Pace, Timmy asked McCain about the choice (on TV) to which McCain said, he would have chosen someone (name escapes memory) from the Navy.

in defense of McCain (I can't believe I said that) he was a flying squid (Naval Aviator) and I would guess it was more in the nature of service rivalry than implying that Pace wasn't a good choice.  Having not heard the remark, however, that's just a guess.
