The grease and the smokey taste of the Spam all bring back some great memories.

Yeah, that was back when camping was camping. Not parking an RV in a paid spot, as close to the showers & clubhouse as possible; but finding a decent place, setting up the pup tent, clearing a fire ring, digging the latrine, etc.

For a lightweight cooking top, I salvaged a narrow wire-type shelf, about 12" X 16" from an old fridge; it tied to the outside of my backpack.

Things have sure changed.

We also used to use powdered milk to mix with water for cereal. Made our own fire starters from rolled up newspapers filled with match heads we cut off and dipped the whole thing in wax. Used the old boy scout hand axe to chop wood. Roasted potatoes covered with tin foil by just throwing them into the fire and waiting about an hour.

Caught slamanders in little creeks. No, we didn't eat them. But we had a lot of fun.
