CALIFORNIA: More people now departing state than moving here
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 3/3/6 | Cicero A. Estrella

Population trend reversing course for 1st time since '98.

For the first time since 1998, the people who relocated from California to other states outnumbered those who migrated in from other states, according to a report released by the state's Department of Finance on Thursday.

California, which had a population of more than 37 million in 2005, had a net loss of 28,565 people to other states during the fiscal year that ended July 1, according to report estimates.

A department analyst said the loss can't be blamed on a mass exodus similar to one that the state experienced before the dot-com boom of the late 1990s.

Howard Roth, chief economist with the department, said California's housing costs discourage people from other states from moving here.

"The outflow hasn't changed much, but fewer people are coming here," Roth said. "Houses were already unaffordable, but they've become more so in the last two years. It's discouraging people from taking job offers in California."

According to DataQuick, the median price of a house in California was $452,000 in January. In the Bay Area, the median price was $607,000.

It's my understanding that there are many people who want to immigrate from Europe to the United States. They are trying to leave the socialism and all of it's associated problems behind. With hopes of making a new life in a free land.

With that understood, why would anyone want to move to the People's Socialist Democratic Republic of Californiastan?

It's the worst of Europe without the history or architecture.

How weird were the suggested names that were rejected?

I'd move back to Oklahoma as soon as I could

I had an aunt who was originally from NY and relocated to Calif in the 70s. She had a daughter living in OK that convinced her to move out there in the 80s. After about a year, she moved back to Calif with the immortal words "I'd rather be a bag lady in Calif than a millionaire in OK".

People who move away Calif seem forever morose about their loss. (Yes, Mildred, you really can't just drive to the beach/mountains/park whenever you want, in any season, and in perfect sunny weather, anymore.) Then, after about 5 years (if they can make it that long), real estate prices have once again gone up so much that they're pretty much out of the game.

I have a sister who moved to TX around 7 yrs ago (yeah, the pretty "hill country" around Austin [snicker] - she would like to come back, but she knows she's done. Her house hasn't appreciated anywhere close to where it needs to be to make it back. (That being said, after each of her kids reaches 18, guess where they head?)

Actually, it's mostly us "cowboy hicks" who were here already when the freaks started taking over, who can't stand it any more.

I hope not.

Don't leave, I just got here and do not want to be left to turn out the lights on all these mindless liberals.

OOOPS! The lights were turned out on the liberals long ago.

Shhhhh!!! Let them leave.

Honest, folks, those other states are paradise. Get out of California while you can.

I was fortunate enough to attend college in another state. It was beautiful and a great experience, but it showed me I am a Californian at heart. In fact, I came running back during an economic downturn in California. Otherwise, I too might have been tempted in recent years to follow the crowd to the newly discovered wonders of living in Nevada, Idaho, Arizona, and so on.

I hope everyone who can be happy in other states heads out and has a great life and leaves more room for those of us who truly love and NEED to be in California.

(It cracks me up. Some of the people I know who have "retired" to other states always seem to be here "visiting." One couple even has rented an apartment here for their frequent "visits.")

I think it's about moving home. I think if California is home for someone , then yes, they'd probably be "morose" living somewhere else. But, if leaving California is returning home then the move means more than a financial upgrade. If I were at home here, then the chance of selling our house and buying an especially nice one with cash left over wouldn't be appealing. I think that the Okies leaving California is only partly about retiring with a wad of money left over from the sell of your CA house. It's about not being at home here. I know born and bred Californians who say the same thing. There is a feeling of not being home which adds some appeal to the "sell your house" plan.

Thank-you for your responses.

They were the only positive ones I read...

..and I have a vested interest, as my son just moved to northern California for a job move...

He's young, single, conservative, and a Christian.

To be honest, he initially wasn't looking forward to the move...it's so far from family and long time friends...

..but the area he relocated to is truly beautiful and a great opportunity for his profession.

Thanks for saying nice things about the state.

Our state, Florida, gets a lot of negative flac too, as you can guess.

But I've lived here 30 years, and love it....don't want to leave it.

Even in San Francisco, the center of Sodom & Gomorrah according to many FReepers, there are over 1,000 churches:

Calif is just like any other state, only nicer. Go into any suburb, and you'll find the same families doing the same activities (visiting family/friends, watching junior's Little League game, etc), going to the same churches, etc as the rest of the country.

For some reason, Calif sends normally rationale FReepers over the edge. Just envy, I guess. (Parting shot: Yosemite is around 1 hr away from where FR's servers are located. People in Fresno think nothing of packing up the car and visiting for a day. Try doing that anywhere else.)

Good point!..Good point!

FREE REPUBLIC ORIGINATES FROM .....FRESNO, CALIFORNIA!...

Seriously, for all the bad that can be said about California...(as in other states)....

..California has given us our beloved Ronald Reagan...

.Free Republic's founder and son..

..James Dobson began in California (then moved to Colorado)...

..John McArthur, Chuck Swindol, Mom's in Touch (Poway, California)..etc, etc.

All California!

BTW, my son, who just moved there, is church hunting right now.

We like to say..."Is God's arm too short to reach to California?!!"

Absolutely not!!

Just a few weeks ago, 30,000.........30,000 !! pro-lifers marched throught the Embarcadero area protesting the anniversary of Roe v Wade.

There is a remnant in California! :))

My sister in law (after splitting the sheets with a complete loser) moved from Missisippi to Boise Idaho -- her only question to the people that suggested she relocate there to finish college was --

"What kind of BUGS do you have there?"

Perspective is a fascinating thing...

You could find parking at the beach?

You could get to and from the mountains without half a day in bumper to bumper coming and going?

You could go to a park, with your kids, and not end up regretting it more than half the time?

After the smack dealer moved in across the street, watching my boy in little league being coached in Spanish, and realizing that 3x my income would qualify me for a 2 bedroom shack in Inglewood -- I had enough.

All those folks leaving California should remember: as you're leaving, don't look back. The last time that happened, someone was turned into a pillar of salt. :^)

You make very good points. Some of the things my out-of-state relatives don't like about California are among the very things I appreciate and missed when I lived elsewhere.

I wonder what would happen if he people of California passed an initiative that banned the income tax, cut all remaining taxes in half, and demanded that the politicians immediately cut spending by as much as possible to compensate.

You'd then wake up and pledge to never again eat spicy food before bedtime.
