60 should be the national speed limit.
Not 55, not 65.... 60.
Why?
"I Can't Drive 55", vintage Sammie Hagar.
How about 62, so that Canadians on the way to Florida can just think "100 km/hr"?
You don't have to worry though. Republicans in the past have been there and ready to protect you from yourself. I'm sure they will be there in the future....
60 is fine.....for a minimum speed limit.
Restrict all vehicles over six wheels (that means you punks pulling trailers, too) to the right one or two lanes and make the left or leftward lanes car only and if you get hit in the rear, it's your fault for not going fast enough.
Ayn Rand beats the crap out of Chomsky, for sure.
Based on what?
"Not 55, not 65.... 60."
The only people I see driving that slow are old people with bad eyesight and stupid people who can think fast enough to drive any faster.
I drive faster. I have to get to work. I get little sleep as is. I'm not getting up a half hour earlier. Highways were designed for rapid travel. 80 is normal for me.
Not 55, not 65.... 60.
70 should be the national speed limit.
Not 60, not 80...70. Then you get the 9 mph gimme.
If you can't drive safely at 70 mph on a freeway, you need to drive on a 2 lane road. And stay out of the way of people trying to get somewhere.
60 should be the national speed limit.
Not 55, not 65.... 60.
______________
No,k it should be 70. Not 65, not 75.... 70.
You said -- "60 should be the national speed limit."
Having lived and driven in various states (like Texas, Oklahoma and Oregon), I've see all sorts of disparate laws regarding speeds.
So, from my own experience it seems that the speeds should be 75 for protected access freeways and 65 to 70 for two-lane state highways (non-protected access).
Of course, those speeds would necessarily be adjusted for winding roads, versus straight roads and for visibility, and then for concentrated population areas.
I think most freeways through cities should not be less than 60-65, although I've seen some bad city freeways where you would have to have 50-55 limits. There are sections of Dallas and Tulsa (downtown areas) that you have to keep it at 50-55 if you don't know *exactly* where you are supposed to be going.
Overall, I think a national 75 MPH freeway speed should be in effect.

Star Traveler
You are right. Nobody should be allowed to drive slower than 60. Anyone caught driving slower should have their license revoked.
80 should be the national speed limit, not 75 not 85 but 80
Our freeways are designed for much higher speeds. I'd sure like to see limits of 75 on the freeway.
Which section of the Constitution authorizes the federal government to set speed limits?
When you're driving across country, it should be 75. Used to be you hit Nebraska and Iowa, you had to drop from 75 to 55, just idiotic. It has changed though. By the way, out in Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Montana Wyoming, I never do under a 100. Never got a ticket either.
Bull!
There should be NO set speed limit at all, which used to be true in some states before the Fed. blackmailed the free states into compliance with their demands.
Basic Speed Law, do not drive faster than the conditions will safely allow.
Crowded road = slow down.
Bad weather = slow down.
Crap car = slow down.
Open road, good weather, good car = GO FOR IT!
The lower limits are for revenue, nothing more.
If speed really killed airlines would only do 55 MPH, not 550 MPH!
There should be no national speed limit.
All we need is some bunch of slick politicians or bureaucrats 2000 miles from here telling us how fast we can or cannot drive in rural North Dakota. NO thank you.
Besides, in Wyoming, the death rate went UP when the 55 mph limit was passed. People accustomed to making a 600 mile trip in 8 hours were taking over 12 at the new limit, and falling asleep at the wheel.
You've got to be kidding. In far West Texas it's 75, and it could easily be 80, which everyone drives anyway. The biggest danger on West Texas highways is falling asleep, and at least at 80 one isn't on the road as long.
Why not base the national speed limit on the size of the state? Texas, being so large could have an 80 mph limit. You guys in Massachusetts? 20 mph. Not 15, not 25 --- 20!
