Speed limits of 55 miles an hour on highways designed for much faster speeds are stupid. Not only are they a revenue enhancement device for government, they suit the Lowest Common Denominator of society, the dumb idiots that shouldn't be driving anyway. Only in America can some dumbass with nothing more than a heartbeat going on for them can get a driver's license.

Part of the problem here is yet another fruit and reflection of our marvelous "individual rights" oriented society with everyone's petty rights taking precedent over any common good.

There's no practical driving methodology or system as there is in Germany where you move to the right if you aren't passing. It's one big freakin' free-for-all here. It's a real blast too when you have policeman wannabes intentionally sitting in the middle lane of the Capital Beltway doing 55 during rush hour.

There's far too great an overemphasis on speed too. It's fine to be swerving in and out of both lanes to one side with a drink in one hand, cell phone in the other, and an open laptop and some office papers as long as you're not speeding. But heaven help you if you're paying full attention doing 69 in a 55! Then it's "shame on you!"

One good thing about the EU is that the Teutonic Highway Sanity has permeated even .... Italy!

The Germans are very good drivers around town, going at a modest pace, obeying signals, signalling, watching for pedestrians, etc. Once out on the Autobahn, it is understood that the fast lane is for people who can (a) afford it by having good equipment, and (b) expect those lower on the automotive food chain to stay out of the way.

BTW, don't try having a bad tire, or a rusty vehicle. So you can imagine my shock when seeing all this sanity starting to be practiced on the Italian roads (well not Napoli).

So if you yearn for the kamikazi Euro drivers of your lost youth, I recommend Greece ... and Portugal. Whew!
