It would be nice to get a school tax break from the local government for those who homeschool, or send their kids to private schools. Hit them in the pocket book. The more that opt into this, the more likely it may happen in a few years. Or, I can hope.
People will get tired of paying for a socialist program they aren't using. The trouble we have right now is too many people enjoy dumping their responsibility on others.
However, there are some small signs that is changing. It just isn't changing fast enough.
As they say, "don't hold your breath."
Taxes aren't about fairness. Taxes are about control.
I hear what you are saying, and there is a law in the works to do just that. However, the law only allows a tax break for those with "approved curriculum." That's how the gov't will get their little fingers into your everyday homeschool. Someone has to decide what's approved and what isn't. I'd just as soon have the Dept of Education abolished, and have the money spent there knocked out of our taxes. Then let me choose how I want to spend it. Public schools would actually have to be good and compete for our money. I know -- there are holes in my idea -- but it would be a place to start.
How much did you have in mind?

Tax credits would implicitly require trusting parents to make the best decisions for their children. It would also be the death knell for the government schools. Not too likely a scenario in the short term. Although in the long term, who knows?
So-called conservatives are also too busy spending their time trying to sell the School Voucher brand Political Snake Oil. In spite of the fact that the courts have knocked down school vouchers at every turn.
