I'm Baptist, we don't give up anything.

Really? Or is that a "Baptists aren't allowed to have any fun anyway so what's the point of giving something up" joke? Anyway, I'm a Catholic and I always give up the drink for Lent, and this year I'm giving up, God help me, salt. It was the doc's suggestion and my gift to my wife. To tell you the truth, I'd rather give up my left arm than cut out salt. I know it sounds ridiculous to be so attached to salt, but I really think I'm going to feel the walk to Calvary very acutely this year

For cutting down salt on a longterm basis, try Indian food - flavor is based on heat, spice, and sourness (yogurt) - no salt needed. We're talking homemade, here. But you're trying to make a sacrifice, right?

I'm Baptist, and Lent is not something Baptist take part in. At the same time, I have to give dredit to Lent. A few years ago my wife (formter catholic) asked me what I would give up for Lent. At the time I doubt anyone would call me a christian, but I told her that for Lent I would read 400 pages of the bible over Lent. That made her happy.

Of course, looking back on it, my wifes' Catholic parents are not too happy with that decision. Now my entire family is Baptist. While committing to read the Bible over Lent did not result in my immediate turning Christ, it definately played a part....
