What are you giving up for Lent?

Most likely I'll switch from Guisness to a light beer for a couple of days.

In simple terms...Christ denied Himself for us.

He tells us to deny ourselves and lift up our crosses daily.

At least at lent, we struggle a bit harder to do just that in rememberence of what He gave for us.

Anyway, fasting is the quickest way to get in touch with your enslaved side of existence. Miss a day of food and you'll be praying to God to fill your belly. Try other fasts and soon you'll find out just how much of this world you're enslaved too.

Without fasting most people simply just wonder: So what did Christ set us free from?

The key to doing Lent correctly is the idea that by depriving yourself of something you truly desire, one is reminded of, in a very small way, of what Christ gave up for us.

That sounds like the sermon a priest gave reminding his parishoners that abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent was not an excuse to hit the all you can eat shrimp and crab buffet.

Our daughter (16-year-old) gave up carbonated beverages last year. She was so caffeine-deprived that she even drank a cup of coffee at an early morning auction - and is still griping about it.

This year she is giving up computer games - the good news there will be for her grades I am sure.

Oh, my wife and I gave up on that quite a while ago. Used to collect the lent from my belly button every night but seemed pointless after a while. Actually not sure now what to do with all that we have collected.

I am a Catholic and plan on saying the rosary everyday, which is good for me. I have been trying to justify not giving up the one thing I REALLY enjoy: My soap opera.

I cannot answer your question.. I do not know where the observance of Lent originated.. Or the idea of giving something up.. but I find it an interesting practice...

The first couple of years I gave up meat and it really tested my will power and gave me a better feeling of what it must feel like to sacrifice. Even if it is just a food group. However over the years I have found that scaling back on my vices and increasing my prayer has giving me a closer feeling to God, I just wish I was strong enough to do it all year through....I will keep trying
