I don't think the mother wanted to become a refugee, but only wanted to continue her visits to Miami. It can still be done easily, just no longer by direct flights on US carriers.
Not too many to PR. Many more to South Florida and even Spain or Italy (provided they have at least one grandparent from those countries, as many Venezuelans do).
All the Cubans I know are patriotic, pro-American hard working men and women. The best mechanic I knew was from Cuba - he came over on the Mariel Boatlift. There are some doctors and dentists I know from Cuba that are fine men.
The problem here is Chavez, not the Ven. community in South Florida.
