"if one could grow their own, why spend ~$400/mo. for a capsule."

Which maybe explains why the pharmaceuticals are not interested in investing tens of millions of dollars into marijuana research.

Or it could be a government conspiracy.

The selective nature of medical research into areas that involve profit motive is well known.

More insidious is the "selective reporting" of medical literature in favor of positive results in studies is far more problematic and, bluntly, more dangerous. For example, if a drug company funds 10 trials on a drug, 6 result in a positive result, 3 return a null hypothesis, and 1 gives a negative correlation, because drug company paid for the research, the researcher can be discouraged from posting the trial for review and publication that data that is against the drug under consideration. If the researcher then publishes against the companies wishes, they may never be considered in the future for doing research with that companies funding, and other drug companies will get the message that the researcher is not a "Team Player". The researcher, his/her academic center, and associates will then lose income.

Th power of this effect is also well known and pervasive
