I mean, really, are there any kinds of donations that ARE legal?!

Sure there are. You, for example, may give $2,000 to any candidate you choose. It is illegal for you to receive an favors in return. You may not give me $2,000 to give to the candidate either, as allegedly happened in this case.

The whole system sucks...Instead of the jackals tweaking the laws so they can benefit even more, we should have a citizen committee (made up of people from all walks of life) decide how campaign finance should work. I'm serious. ENOUGH.

This is what's so hideous about campaign finance laws and how they apply. The fact is, the donor gave a genuinely illegal contribution: He laundered money to get around the limits. So, no matter who he gives the money to, they can be said to receive an "illegal contribution". Now at this stage, they could have known nothing about the illegality.

The donor then goes to the congressman/woman and exercises his first amendment right to redress grievances. The fact is, the guy wanted to get a public works project into her district. She would have listened to him if he donated to the other candidate. It's ridiculous, but Harris will still end up paying the price for this smear job.

I think this is what campaign finance reform gets us. Everything is escalated to "illegal" so that the public gets the impression of growing corruption, and faith in the system falls ever faster. When in truth, it's not any more corrupt than it's always been. Thanks McPain!
