Queen Rania, Bill Clinton to address Dubai charity gala
DUBAI (AFP) — Her Majesty Queen Rania and former US President Bill Clinton will address a gala dinner in Dubai on Thursday hosted by a charity organisation that aims at harnessing technology to help underprivileged children, organisers said Wednesday.
Dubai, a Gulf trading hub, has launched a multibillion-dollar campaign to also become the Middle East's tourism, leisure and e-capital.
In 2003, the emirate is to host the annual board meetings of the IMF and World Bank.
Clinton will also be addressing a three-day Saudi economic forum focusing on the implications of the Sept. 11 attacks that opens in the Saudi city of Jeddah on Saturday, organisers said.

Iran and UAE explored here Wednesday ways of expanding bilateral trade relations.
Iranian Commercial attache in UAE Qassem Mirzaie told IRNA that the meeting focused on expansion of trade ties between Iran's Mazandaran province and Dubai.
The meeting was attended by over 50 private and public officials of the Mazandaran province who discussed removing hurdles in expansion of investments and trade relations.
Mirzaie who is also the head of Iran Trade Center in Dubai said that the UAE official stressed that the Iran-UAE trade exchange which stood at dlrs 3.3 billion in 2005, should be increased through holding trade exhibitions.

FORMER US president Bill Clinton praised Dubai’s leaders last week, telling them the way Islamic and Western values and cultures are being merged is “wonderful”.

Clinton said: “Dubai is a role model of what could be achieved despite the other negative developments in the region. When I went to Dubai for the first time, I was taken to a technology facility where I hooked up to a bank kiosk and found that one can use a conventional banking service, while at the same time opt for an Islamic Sharia compliant service, which I thought was wonderful. This is a very good example of how cultures and values could be merged and offered to the rest. I was amazed and I have a lot of admiration for Sheikh Mohammed for what he’s doing in Dubai.”

One thing I think is overlooked about the Middle East, that I think you should -- that we should be more attention to, is that there are successful, open societies welcoming diversity. If you look at Dubai, if you look at Abu Dhabi, if you look at Qatar, if you look at the welcoming of western educational institutions, modern economies, people of all different religious, racial and ethnic groups, and the enormous success they're having, I don't think you can minimize the impact that is having on the psychology of Arab leaders, too. They're having an enormous success. And we only write about the problems in the Middle East. I'd really like to see the people who are doing a good job over there get some credit for the impact they are having.
There was a conference in Dubai on the Arab world in 2020 a couple of months ago that I went to, and the leader of Dubai stood up and said to the 2,000 Arabs there, we have got to stop blaming other people for our problems; we have got to stop making excuses and we've got to modernize -- you can all be like Dubai, but we all have to change. That was unheard of 10 years ago, for somebody to do that. So I'm thrilled by what's going on.

It turns out that an anti-Israeli foundation run by the crown prince of Dubai owns the very deed to CAIR's headquarters located almost in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol. The foundation has held telethons to support families of Palestinian suicide bombers.

I think there has been a lot of "over the top" "knee-jerk" reaction by people on both sides of this issue. It's a shame that someone can't just have an opinion without being labeled. I guess it's because if a person runs out of "ammo" in a debate, pidgeon-holing an opposite opinion is next.The problem is most Freepers don't fit in a nice, neat, tidy box.

I agree. I've only been around since December. I've seen a lot of great discussion and provocative ideas here. However, this topic has created immediate mass hysteria and I'd rather see more objective discussion. Isn't that what Free Republic is all about?
I've posted links to disturbing info and been told I'm hysterical etc. Apparently, if someone has an opposing opinion, they're over-reacting. I too thought that thinking for myself was the ideal. It looks like "group think" is to be prized more.
