I don't know about the present state of the zoo, but I went there back in the 50's when I was in 8th grade and it was excellent and way ahead of its time.

No telling what has happened to it since.

I've spent many a summer afternoon at the Detroit Zoo before the riots of 1967. For it's time, it was truly a masterpiece. The polar bear fountain ranks right up there with a Michaelangelo (at least in my fond memories). Unfortunately, Detroit's downward spiral began in '67 and is still going strong some 40 years later.
