What Did George Washington Look Like?
ABC News ^ | 2/19/06 | ABC News

George Washington is known as the father of our country, but he might also have been the original American hunk.

The History Channel decided to try to figure out what the first president looked like. A team of artists, anthropologists and forensic scientists used cutting-edge technology to reconstruct Washington's looks. The result was a whole new look for a familiar figure.

"The most difficult part of the challenge in a way was morphing backwards when there are no images of the 19-year-old," said recreation team member, Ivan Schwartz. "Our 19-year-old mystery man — the man who would become leader of the country."

The team recreated Washington at age 57 when he was president; at age 45 when he commanded troops in the Revolutionary War and as a teenage surveyor.

The three life-size figures will be displayed in the new $95-million museum and education center in Washington's home, Mount Vernon, which is scheduled to open in October.

A Real Person

"When we ask people they say, 'Well Washington was great, but he's stiff, he's formal, he wears that white wig, he's got bad teeth,' " said James Rees, the executive director of Mount Vernon, which is located outside the nation's capital. "He's a darn good looking guy. And you're going to be shocked, I think, to see Washington looking like a movie star."

The more I read about GW, the more I'm convinced of his rank as the #1 president. If ever there was an indispensible man in this county's history...GW was it.

The force of his good character is beyond measure.

Looks like "Data" on Star Trek.
Looks like Commander Data

Sorry. Brent Spiner has lower cheekbones and a much bigger schnoz.

All the pics posted of Gore made me wonder what Washington would have done if the two ever could have met.

Probably handed his ass to him on a plate!

LOL!

Is there a better angle on the recreation of Washington?

The one posted either shows Washington had an extremely flat face, or it's a purposeful up-the-nose shot.

Wonder if the photographer was a liberal?

Washington was the greatest man of the 18th Century. We would not have our country without him.

I had a chance to visit the "Hall of the Signers" at the U.S. Constitution Museum in Philadelphia not long ago. They have life-sized statues of all the signers. Washington was very tall (6'-3") and a very imposing figure. I'm sure his physical stature helped him in his role as leader of the revolution and the infant country.

he wears that white wig

Washington DID NOT wear a wig. That was his real hair, and yes, he had a ponytail.

What Did George Washington Look Like?

I would assume he looked like a young Yassir Arafat.

Yes, so true.

That must be why our kids' public schools are ignoring him on his Day. God Forbid they stir up any patriotism.

It is a disgrace and a sign of America's decline . . .

that Washington's birthday and Lincoln's birthday are no longer national holidays, which they should be,-

And should be on the whatever day of the week they fall.

Not that I agree with Lincoln about many things--but I greatly admire him nonetheless.

Our country will also never be able to thank him enough for the precedent that he set on giving up power. That is what now distinguishes our Presidency from all the trivial power mongering Prime Ministers around the world.

Twice the most powerful man in the country, and twice he gave it up by only his own will.
