Even so, this is third time in 18 months that vandals have damaged Gettysburg monuments.

Maybe they need a better security system?

"Maybe they need a better security system?"

Kinda hard to secure since the monuments are all over the town and countryside, and public highways run through the park. But yes, the need to somehow make the monuments more secure.

No, time for public canings, hangings, etc.

a better security system

It's a huge area. If the vandals are determined, they cannot be stopped without an army on night patrol.

It's a vast field with a couple of monuments around it.

This wasn't done by hand, somebody used a truck.

Impossible at this time. They can barely keep the grass cut, let alone hire more law enforcement personnel or install security cameras. Plus, the layout of the battlefield does not lend itself to fencing it in and closing the gates at night.

It's a big arsed battlefield.

They would need an Army LITERALLY to patrol it all night long.

there are so many ways to actually enter the park that it would be virtually impossible to close them all without having thousands upon thousands standing shoulder to shoulder to do it.

I made my first visit to Gettysburg this past summer. The monuments are scattered all over the town and the military park, many thousands of acres, and most of it unfenced and unsecured. It would be very difficult to beef up security enough to guarantee that this never happens.

Still sickening, though. Probably a couple of little potheads who can barely read, barely speak the language, were raised by liberal "parents" who gave them everything they demanded and were more concerned with being their kids' pals than their parents, and decided to trash some monuments because they were "bored." Visiting Gettysburg and Antietam (which I did on the same trip) was a very moving experience for me. Everyone needs to go visit these places.

A few snipers with night scopes on .22's to plink their knees.
