I guess if we don't teach history to people like you, we are doomed to repeat it.
Your island of Manhattan analogy is absolutely retarded on just about every level. No, I did not learn history from people like you. Thank God.
If you want to learn history, learn the history of government-controlled economies, like the one Pat Buchanan and Hillary Clinton would prefer for the United States.
That history is quite unpleasant.

the history of government-controlled economies
Like OUR government enacting the ESA so farmers, ranchers, timber property owners and fishermen can't use their property to earn a living?
Like OUR government killing off the private sector jobs through "free trade" so that only GOVERNMENT sector jobs are growing?
Like our trade representative going to Hong Kong and selling off our cotton industry to Africa so the transnational corporations can get FDI there?
Like our government using EPA and DOT money to control the housing market by requiring cities and towns to build high density "smart growth" developments and not permitting single family home projects by individual property owners?
You really are NOT paying attention.
