Reagan beat Carter by 8 points and Mondale by almost 20 points!!
These were the widest victories for Republicans since Nixon's wipeout of McGovern.

Pence is a Reagan Conservative Republican. If Reagan can do it, so can Pence - assuming Pence has the stage presence that Reagan had.
Reagan was no further right than Bush but was far more capable of using the media to communicate directly with the voters.
Plus his opposition was in complete disarray led by the incompetent Carter and the idiotic Mondale. Bush had to face much more formidible forces far better organized and practiced in control of the electorate.
