The only personal property you have when you buy a music CD is the media itself. When you buy a CD, you are buying the media, and renting permission to use the contents.

There was a similar argument going on twenty or so years ago, when Half Price Books and similar knock off stores started selling records, cassettes, and CDs. The industry was upset that second or third generation sales were going on and they weren't getting a piece of the pie. There was talk about outlawing the sale of anything other than brand new media.
