You can't judge anything by those threads.
As for Harriet Miers, those of us who said, "Let's wait and see about this" were pummelled by the Bush haters. It was a feeding frenzy and completely lacked any perspective on what was going on.
I've never been more ashamed in my life of this forum than I was by those who knifed Harriet Miers in their unbridled emotions.
I am a strong Bush supporter and I was one of the loudest voices here calling for him to dump her nomination. I have great respect for the fact that Bush finally admitted that her nomination was a first-class blunder, and especially that he had the strength of character to remedy it by appointing Alito instead.
I have never been more proud in my life of the conservatives who worked night and day until that train wreck was averted. My list of heroes includes Ann Coulter, whose voice was clearly heard above the rest.
Liberal democrats too are bitterly disappointed that Miers was dumped and replaced by Alito. That should tell you all you need to know.
Well said. What really bugged me is Dubya has always told the American people where he stands and has followed through on his convictions. There are lots of reasons to criticize Dubya for what he promised to get elected, but once he was elected he did a great job of fulfilling those promises. One of his promises was to nominate conservative judges and he has nominated some excellent people. I trusted Dubya when he said he had worked with Miers for many years and she is a good woman.
When one knows the American history of cronyism in regard to SCOTUS nominations, and has looked at the qualification of other SCOTUS, one is left asking why the right felt Miers was impalpable. But they did so it just shows what a thankless job Dubya endures. I wouldn't want the job. I'd just become bitter with my party.
The question I would be asking myself if I was Dubya is "Do Coulter, Limbaugh, and Levin really think I want to screw up America by putting a wolf in sheep's cloths on the SCOTUS?" Do they think Dubya is stupid or evil?
I wonder how many acceptable conservative SCOTUS candidates we have left to offer and who are willing to undergo the immense "bring your family to tears" scrutiny.
It's bad enough when the evil rats sabotage us but when my party called Miers unqualified and a crony I felt shame. When Miers was withdrawn Dubya bounced right back with Alito.
I think it is hard to gage a person by their resume alone. I have watched Dubya closely because I voted for him twice. I have seen who he picks as advisers and spokesmen. He is better informed than I am, and I trust his judgment even though I disagree with his policy at times.
