If you have a deep fat fryer, there isn't much spatter. I am a compulsively neat cook who cleans up after every stage, so with a raised doughnut, there is time to clean up while the dough rises.

I don't do it often because we really don't need all those calories. But there are times on a cold winter weekend when my son & DIL are visiting when it is the perfect activity and we all participate. My DH is the household deep fry cook and the kids add the sugar or icing toppings.

Haven't tried to fill any, yet, but may do that next winter.
