The Dems don't want this hearing... they want another independent-prosecutor.

Specter needs to be more interested in saving our nation from attack.

Why would G have any objection to Ashcroft coming before the committee????
That question from Specter doesn't even make sense, since the Committee can subpoena whomever they want.

WHAT is the deal with Specter? He seems determined to undermine the administration and NSA. Since he supported Alito, he has to now pay back the AFL-CIO and ACLU (his supporters) by banging Bush on this. He tries to play both sides of the fence.

They are hoping Ashcroft contradicts Gonzales...

Yes - it's remarkable.
Specter: On looking at conressional intent re use of force, whether COngress intended for that resolution to carry authorization for this electronic surveillance, you said that is not something we would likely get. If this is something you couldn't likely get, then how can you say that Congress gave that authority?
Gonzales: In that press conference, I clarified that statement. The consensus was in a meeting that legislation couldn't be obtained without compromising the program.

I was thinking, Roberts and Alito had to put up with crap from these idiots because they were trying to be confirmed. Gonzalez has nothing to lose. I hope when the Dems get nasty, and they will (Feingold, etc), he gives it right back to them.

I hope when the Dems get nasty, and they will (Feingold, etc), he gives it right back to them. Unfortunately, I don't think Gonzales is the type of person (personality-wise) to give it back to them.

"Wasn't it Ashcroft who let us all know about the memo regarding the Wall that was put up by Gorelick??" Yup
To: Peach
Specter took the same tack when he opened the hearings with Alito. He came right out of the box asking questions that would have been at the top of any Dem's list. I think he does this to reduce the effect of Dems being able to pound a witness on the same issue. The witness can say "as I have already said..."

Specter is doing a FANTASTIC JOB. He is framing the questions in a way that allows them to be answered. He is sucking the oxygen from the Democrats. Gonzales is being set up to respond to Democrats by saying "I addressed that question with Senator Specter".
We don't have to like Specter, but this is his expertise. He knows exactly what he is doing. He is actually protecting Gonzales.

So they are questioning Gonzales et al about his carrying out the provisions of the Patriot Act and FISA which THEY passed and authorized?
