"You want to make sure that you are sensitive to the cultural sensitivities," said Mike Days, editor of the Philadelphia Daily News, which may run the images next week, but remains cautious. "I think you want to do it in a way that makes sense."I'm waiting for other US papers to do it first. That way it will be harder for them to find and kill all of us."

Doug Clifton, editor of The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, agreed that the offensive nature precluded running the cartoons. "It has become a part of great angst and I don't see any reason to run it, you can just describe it," he said of the cartoon images. "I don't see a need to insert ourselves in that fight.""I don't see a need to spend the money to hire an armed guard around the clock for the next few years"

YES....someone should post the burning Twin Towers with people jumping to their deaths next to these cartoons. Further comments removed prior to posting for fear of being banned...

Problem is a gentleman from Nation Review was on TV this morning - - can't remember if it was Fox or CNN - - and said NR wouldn't run the cartoons. I was disgusted.
Running the cartoons is the same as wearing the yellow armbands in Hitler's time. It is something that has to be done in solidarity with Denmark.

I hope every major newspaper in Europe and America publishes these cartoons. They're certainly newsworthy now.

I sent the managing editor of our paper an email. I went on about the first amendment and freedom of the press and I got back this reply.
"Here's my reply...NO!"(bold mine)
I emailed back and asked if the reason was cowardice. I went on to say that newspapers exist because of the first amendment and he tossed it out. I told him he was in the wrong bussiness and he was the epitome of hypocrisy. I haven't heard back from him yet on the second email...but I'm waiting.

That and the fact that their double standard regarding Christian fundamentalists is rooted in their deep loathing of Middle American culture, which is the crux of these urban elitist's whole sense of identity.

My local rag (owned by the
New York Times) had the story buried on page 3, right under the hearing aid ads. No pictures, naturally, but they were brave enough to describe the cartoons - an offense for which they do not risk beheading.
