Bush is the first President since who knows when to at least address the issue. Yet, the porous borders and crappy enforcement over the last 100 years is laid at his feet. His strategy is 3 pronged, and only the third prong - guest workers- is debatable. If he can get the other two nailed down - stop the flow and quicken deportation - he will be rightly hailed as the only president to make a difference on this issue. He's going to follow thru, and congress better work with him to get it done.
I don't give a crap about the guest worker program one way or the other, as long as the other two items are implemented.
"Bush is the first President since who knows when to at least address the issue"
100% correct.
You have a point. But the past is past, and we can only go forward from here. I hope you're right about prongs #1 & 2, but prong #3 is a loser as far as I'm concerned. Why should we be Mexico's safety valve? Illegals are sending billions home to mamacita and the kids, money that should have been earned by Americans and stayed in this country. Not to mention the opportunity for terrorists and drug dealers to enter undetected.
The borders should have been slammed shut on 9/12- and that's all there is to it.
There's a great big effin' hole in America's security and it better get closed, pronto!
I know when and which POTUS. It was 1954 and it was Ike.
Nice try -- but .
Ike implemented "Operation Wetback". Illegals were rounded up by the INS and deported en masse. The ones who didn't get caught got so scared they VOLUNTARILY fled back to México. By the end 1,000,000,000 ILLEGALS were 'removed'. Which at the time was practically all of them
Now if you'd like to talk about recent times, how's this -- in 2000, there was an estimated Seven Million illegals in the USA. We now have at least, 14 Million (maybe 20), so in five years Dubya has ALLOWED the ILLEGAL population to at least double.
And if you note, four of those years was after 9-11-2001 when he supposedly, allegedly, hypothetically, in his dreams, "closed our borders to protect us".
In short, his 'immigration stratergy' SUCKS.
