More on Haleigh.....I am glad to note Haleigh has a fine attorney as T'wit pointed out. The attorney is up against a formidable foe, a bureaucracy which claims exclusive ownership of Haleigh. Denise Monteiro, owner extraordinaire, of course would not let Haleigh's mother visit on her birthday.

Ownership means more than sentimental attachments the bureaucrats cannot understand anyway.

Officials would not comment on Poutre's condition during her birthday celebration yesterday but released a statement: ''Franciscan Hospital for Children loves to join our patients in celebrating their birthdays. As a pediatric hospital, we understand how important birthdays are for kids, as well as providing an opportunity for fun and happy feelings that can be an important part of treatment."

Yeah, right..

Implications that the attorney didn't do her job, I guess.

Haleigh turns 12, but Mom wasn't invited

And now the head of a child welfare agency comes to the rescue of the (hopefully to be more notorious) DSS...

We see, it isn't the fault of DSS. If only the were able to properly place Haleigh in the first place they wouldn't have needed to try to kill her, or whatever.

The wrong way to reform child welfare

Maybe I am just getting the wrong impression and I hope somebody will set me straight if so.

Lead sentence: >> Haleigh Poutre, the severely beaten girl who doctors and state officials once wanted to let die...

This idiot reporterette does not know the difference between killing a child and "letting" a dying patient go.

Later in the story, she called it an "end-of-life case." Well, that settles it -- snuff the child! She's dying! She can't get better! And notice how calling it a "case" tucks the whole matter away into a government manila folder. It's merely a case, not the life of a precious child hanging in the balance. And it's none of our business. The DSS is in charge of these things.

Megan Tench, if Haleigh were your child, God forbid, you'd use honest words and voice real feelings.

>> ... strong efforts will be underway to reduce reliance on residential schools ...

We used to call them boarding schools or workhouses; only here, it is the state who uses them to warehouse lost and desperate kids. They have no family ever to come home to. No love, no home, no family. I can't think of a better formula to wreck a child, can you?

We have a lot of poignant literature about boarding schools. Oliver Twist, for instance. C. S. Lewis wrote angrily about his boarding school, which he called "Bergen-Belsen" in honor of the German concentration camp.

In the case of the DSS, there's little doubt the "schools" will teach welfare dependence, and it's a cinch they will NOT teach the moral values required for responsible adulthood.

Interesting development: Your link was functional but just turned into a demand for one to register for boston.com. That means I can't go back and get more quotes from this mush-mouthed fellow telling the DSS not to go so fast in getting rid of its little concentration camps.
