[Acute cortical blindness: a reversible complication of acute kidney failure in a child with burns]
An 11 year old boy was admitted to the Department of Pediatrics Medical School of Vienna with 2nd and 3rd degree burns covering 30% of his body.
He presented with complications--high fever, vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration--which had led to acute renal failure.
After 6 hemodialyses renal function recovered after two weeks and the patient entered a polyuric phase. In connection with a transient dehydration the patient showed a sudden bilateral cortical blindness.
The computerized tomogram (CT) showed vague evidence of an occipital cortical ischemia. We assume that several factors have played a role in this sudden occurrence. As a result of hypovolemia and coincident anemia and electrolyte inbalance, cerebral edema and cortical tissue hypoxia with emphasis in the occipital cortical region developed in the brain possibly already damaged by burn injury. A complete reversal of the clinical state was achieved. The patient was discharged with normal vision and normalized renal function.

Thank you. I don't see bad faith here on anyone's part, and the discrepancy in medical observations is explainable. What more need be said? There's no issue here.
Re: #1061. It is amazing how much information you can find if you know what you're looking for. Well done!
For everyone who thinks research like this is a waste of time, remember that LE has cold case files. Sometimes modern technology and research capabilities allow for a case to be solved. Once again, great find bjs : )
""In connection with a transient dehydration the patient showed a sudden bilateral cortical blindness.""
Bjs1779, the information you posted on *cortical blindness*, is huge. From your report, Terri's cortical blindness was due to dehydration and not a prior condition. The death camp used the finding of cortical blindness in the autopsy, as spin to dispute the fact that Terri could see people, ballons and etc.
Your find is amazing. Michael Schiavo abused Terri all those years by refusing to supply her with glasses. It was obviously that she had vision problems. All one had to do was look at the photos of her wearing glasses (thick ones) as a child. Terri was a real fighter, who over came so many cruel obstacles. Even without the glasses, she obviously needed, she did her best to respond.
The autopsy was used by those who supported Terri's death, to invalidate the videos. Where were the the specialists who could have explained the effects of dehydration and cortical blindness? I sure didn't hear it explained anywhere, except here, by you, bjs1779.
Thank God for FreeRepublic and it's Freepers~!!!!
Interesting find. Especially interesting that the cortical blindness was fully corrected despite damage due to tissue hypoxia and edema. Nevertheless, we can conclude that dehydration causes all sorts of nasty things to happen to the patient. Death by dehydration is not reversible.
