Bird flu? Burmese authorities burn chicken feet in Rangoon
Jan 26, 2006 (DVB) - Although the true extent of the preventative measures against the spread of bird flu in Burma is not known, residents from Rangoon told DVB that piles of chicken feet belonging to a livestock company were destroyed recently in the incinerator of a local crematorium.
According to a staff at Rangoon Hteinpin Cemetery, chicken feet were transported to the crematorium in containers. He added that the cremation of human remains was severely delayed by the destruction of chicken feet.
Another staff said that it was the only time he has seen chicken feet destroyed at the crematorium in his life, and his colleagues are also said to be very puzzled by the destruction of one only part of a chicken.
We contacted responsible persons from the countrys animal breeding and veterinary department for comments in connection with the destruction of chicken feet, but we are still unsuccessful.
They're going to hold their feet to the fire until they cough up this flu bug.
I think they need to find where the rest of the chicken parts went.
The feet are eaten in Burma. This was probably a batch that someone bought to prepare and sell, then it was discovered the farm where it came from may have been infected.
Burma is as far from modern medicine as they are from putting a man on the moon. They can't both address a bird flu epidemic AND keep it secret because they can't address it on their own.
Sadly, the secret may well be more important than thousands of lives.
I wonder if the chickens mind having their feet burned?
