It's a pinch collar... used by many many people in training their dogs... I use them and swear by them for training big dogs without a lot of brute force. They aren't 'spikes' really, and they don't so much hurt as they do mimic the feeling on the neck they'd feel when their mother, or a dominant dog, plotzes them by biting on the back of the neck. They don't work because they hurt, they work because they speak to a part of the dog's psyche that they instinctively understand.
I'm no fan of pit bulls, but I do believe in being accurate in our posts about dogs, dog training, and methods.
Family pet of peace ping.
Landfills await the garbage(Pit Bulls). Maybe that is why the first word in their name is Pit.
I believe that any dog is trainable to be safe around (from watching "The Dog Whisperer"...that guy is good). But the trick is that you have to understand dog psychology/behavior, and most people do not.
The problem I have with the "pit bulls should all be exterminated immediately" argument is that it bares a chilling resemblance to Gun Grabbing. The idea that because something is potentially dangerous, then the government has a right to seize and destroy it from private citizenry and ownership.
That's a prong collar.
And some people simply don't know how to use them. Me included - well, only cuz of inexperience. ;-)
"That dog should have been "euthanized" on the spot with a Louisville Slugger."
Yes, brutally beating it to death with a baseball bat would certainly make things better.
"Note the heavy-duty choker chain, with inward-facing spikes, in the picture..."
Proving what, exactly, in your mind? I've seen these used on a variety of large, hard to control dogs.
It needs to be eliminated from the gene pools of dogs, no doubt, having proven its ability to harm a child unprovoked (so the story says, anyway). But I don't blame the dog for what it did - it had no evil intent - it just did what came naturally to it, due to breeding and/or training. I think it's sad when a healthy animal like this has to be put down, although not as sad as a little girl being maimed or killed.
It is true, however, it doesn't explain why "pits" were quite popular pet dogs a CENTURY ago - when they were closer to the actual evils of deliberate fighting.
Worthless, poorly trained pit bull. It didn't even kill her. No wonder the owner had it put down.
The pit-bull loving mod should be along shortly to deal with the thread.
"It's always a pitbull.
You are wrong.
It's media hype.
There are thousands of emergency room visits each year caused by dog bites. The leading dog in this parade is, I hthink, either the lab or golden retriever.
Its just that retrievers don't make good news stories.
Pitt bulls do.
The whole thing is a trumped up hysteria.
10 years ago they did the same things to dobermans. When's the last time you saw a story on dobs?
They've fallen out of favor with the press, but that doesn't mean they still don't bite people.
As far as a pit or any dog, being alone with an infant, well, that's just dumb.
I don't trust my mini pins with an infant, they can do real damage.
I can agree with that. I also think that many cases such as this are as much the fault of the owner as the dog. Especially when an owner has two or three of them and doesn't secure them properly or leaves them alone with small kids. These type people shouldn't have any breed of dog.
An 11 month old kid shouldn't be left alone with any dog unsupervised. To an average dog, a little kid looks like a playtoy. An a pitbull is not an average dog.
Sometimes I think some people are so stupid, so bereft of common sense that I think Democracy is a bad thing.
I'm not a pit fan, but the reason they can be so deadly now is because they are popular with fighting rings; they breed them for certain traits, give away or sell some of the puppies, they in turn are bred, and so on. In the eighties it was Dobermans. Toy poodles, apple head chihuahuas and yorkies are the same way; since people (puppy mills) breed for type, and not temperment, most of them are vicious little rat dogs. Not mine, though. Mine's a little pink angel. ;-P
Hey, LEL. How's it going?
It's going. :-) How are you?
I wouldn't leave ANY dog alone with a child. Dogs, unfortunately, are animals, and we seem to forget that. They can even do unintentional harm.
My dog is a yellow lab/whippet mix. He's the sweetest dog you could ever hope for. But he's really hyper and playful, and he thinks everyone wants to be his friend. He could hurt a small child unintentionally trying to play with it. (At 50 pounds, he doesn't realize his own strength, either).
Doing good.
Did you check out my last couple of FReeptoons?
I agree.
I remember a news story several years ago in which a pomeranian killed an infant. The baby was on the couch and the grandmother stepped out of the room to get a bottle or something. The baby apparently wimpered and the dog snapped and bit her in the neck, severing her jugular. It was awful. A freaking POMERANIAN!
I agree with your statement except I'll add that small children should not be alone with dogs of any kind, even labs and golden retrievers.
