The administration of President George W. Bush issued a harsh warning to China on Wednesday that it must start behaving as a "fully accountable" member of the global trading system or face growing trade friction with the US.

Why would anybody in China take the US seriously?

We don't have the guts to follow through and they know it.

That'll be hard to do since they hold so much of our paper debt. Don't think that isn't being used as a cudgel against us.

True, but there's a difference. They're funding our budget deficit. That's a structural necessity. If their businesses are booted, they can go somewhere else. Or steal the tech and get their prison labor to produce the goods.

...and they are spending a big part of the proceeds like this:

We need to address them, as difficult as it may be to start, the same way that Ronald Reagan treated the "Evil Empire" of his day.

Whether we need it or not is not the point. We don't produce anything anymore and have to buy their crap. Tarriffs will only increase the cost of their crap that we have to buy, since we don't make anything anymore, by 30% or more. And as far as currency manipulation, there is no bigger offender than the Federal Reserve.

We got the cash, they got the debt. Looks fine to me. If we announce a moratorium on the portion of our debt, that they own, it will be their problem.

Lets hope someone has the balls to do what needs to be done.

Let's not hold our breath while waiting.

We birth, house, feed etc. generations of parasites that end up robbing, raping and murdering the good U.S. citizens. We have troops around the world guarding other nation's borders and let our southern border get stampeded across. We let politicians get by with bribes, pork fat, selling national secrets etc.. Damn I'm getting mad! You know how when you flush the toilet and everything starts going around and around and down the pipe - I think that is us.

There was a report on Lou Dobb's tonight about the car industry in the U.S. The point made was that everyone talks about Free Trade with China but we don't have it. When they start importing their cars to the U.S. next year the tariff on them will be 2%. The tariff on U.S. cars imported to China is 25%. We're fools. These are trade agreements OUR government agreed to. I think someone got paid off.

Even without the disparity in tariffs the whole notion is utter nonsense.

Their government refuses to respect intellectual property, for starters. We have to pay for licensing to use patented technology. They get it for free.

They have hordes of political prisoners they can work to death. We have to compete for labor in a free market, on top of paying minimum wage and complying with OSHA.

They are free to pollute to their heart's content. We must comply with burdensome environmental laws.

I wish the free trade crowd would expend a little more effort on promoting free trade within our own borders. I'm sick to death of paying taxes on every g%damn thing I buy and every f-ing dollar I earn, while they have an aneurysm if somebody proposes a tariff on goods imported from one of the world's most flagrant abusers of human rights. All the while the Chinese are waiting to hang us with the rope that we sell them, which shall be paid for with the bribes required to do business in their crappy country.
