Cops: Girl Died While Playing With Family Dog

(AP) MANORVILLE A six-year-old girl playing with her dog in the backyard was strangled - when the pet apparently grabbed her scarf and playfully pulled her down to the ground and dragged her around the yard. Suffolk County Homicide Detective Lieutenant John Fitzpatrick calls it "an absolutely tragic story."

Police say the accident happened in the backyard of little Kaitlyn Hassard at 4:30 Tuesday afternoon. The girl came home from school wearing the scarf and the dog began pulling on it. The girl's mother put the dog in the backyard and a few minutes later Kaitlyn asked to go out and play with the dog, which weighs about 70 pounds.

The one-and-a-half Golden Retriever named Jessie, again began playing with the 40-pound girl tugging on her scarf.

Lieutenant Fitzpatrick says the girl was in the yard for no more than ten minutes, because the family was going to run an errand at the Post Office. When her eleven-year-old brother went to the backyard to get his sister, he found her lying on the ground.

The boy called his mother who called 9-1-1 and began CPR. The girl was pronounced dead at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. Lieutenant Fitzpatrick says "there were no injuries inflicted by the dog." He adds "I don't believe the dog's actions were intentionally malicious."

The dog has been brought to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter.

Of course. I have found that those are the ones who are the "experts" on parenting, haven't you? :-)

Yep. And, I love watching them when they have their own little gems.

I assume you are referring to my great-grandmother's death with the fence? I hope there was some investigation done, but as I was not even born yet, I really have no idea. I just think that every apparently accidental death should be investigated thoroughly, and people shouldn't get their noses out of joint over it. Freak accidents DO happen. OTOH, smart people can sometimes make a murder look very much like an accident. Both possibilities should always be considered.

A friend of mine had a beautiful one that would let his child do anything to it; one night while I was babysitting, she evidently did something that was just enough -- because he put his mouth around her HEAD and just gave it one shake -- one shake only.

You're right. The guys with the chain saws will be cutting a hole in her bedroom ceiling, like in Brazil.

I really try, but the big male figured out how to open the door to the clothes dryer, and little ones attack the stuff inside and drag it around because its "moving".

I think it might have been a conspiracy involving the CFR, The Free Masons and the Rosicrucians.

Yeah, that's what it was......

It's already been investigated, sorta. The Dr. and nurse questioned us about it extensively, and the insurance company sent us a questionnaire trying to find out whose dog it was and where it happened before they would pay-they still haven't paid. And Howlin, my dog does put his mouth around my kids but he never bites.

I like the way they are SO positive about everything.

We've raised three children, a niece, a nephew, and now have five grandchildren and we're STILL saying "What??" with that stupid look parents get on their faces.

"Obviously your not interested in facts to make a determination about something then. That is a dangerous mindset."

Your point is silly. You expect me to do a background check on you before I respond to your post? Who you are has nothing to do with this discussion. Unless you live next door to these people and have some inside information, get over yourself.

"Not all crime scenes have obvious physical evidence. "

This one did. That's the point. And unless some of the evidence is contrary then there is no point to continuing it.

Or you could be like the liberals and say, "The seriousness of the charge against George Bush, Sr., requires that we investigate."

There's a difference between a fishing expedition and an investigation.

I need a lot more than a freak accident.

You feel free to waste your friggin time being overprotective, why should I care?

Nice language, too. You really drove your point home.

Generally goldens are one of the wimpiest mildest dogs around, but you have to always keep an eye when any 70 lbs dog is around a 40lbs kid..... I am sure the dog did not do anything intentional to harm this child... so tragic. Prayers for the family.

What more do you need?

For people who don't know what they're talking about to not spread wild rumors?

Would that be too much?

"Freak accidents DO happen. OTOH, smart people can sometimes make a murder look very much like an accident. "

And you need to cut back on the CSI reruns as well.

Investigations are pursued because there is evidence or reasonable suspicion, not because someone wants to do a fishing expedition.

"I won;t let them leave my sight when they are at a tender age. "

Hoo Boy, I'd HATE being your kid!

Locked up, never allowed out, don't do this, don't do that, don't don't don't.

What was that tune from Pink Floyd?

"Momma did it have to be so high...."

"He put his paw up and pushed her with it. She lost her balance fell off the bed and hit her forehead on my dresser which required a trip to the emergency room. Goldens are the greatest dogs in the world, but sometimes stuff just happens."

Now who's being naive? Sounds premediated to me.

I'm alert, because I care. Piss off.

If I were you, I'd remember that post if you DO have any children and something happens to them.

You obviously cannot make any points without trash talk.

If I was your sister, I'd be worried about MY child being with you.
