Not to mention the gravity on Mars isn't high enough to sustain 1 atmosphere of air pressure.

I, on the other hand, think the milky way and the whole cosmos is crawling with life and there's no reason to think we are the advanced kind.

Ironically, our first hint of ET will probably be oddly elevated hydrocarbons in an alien atmosphere.

You might be copernican if you think we aren't the center of creation. :)

Yes you *can* spy on them. You just have to fill out a "request for warrant" in triplicate and file it 60 days ahead of time with the IISA (Intergalactic Intelligence Surveillance Act) court.

The earth detecor telescopes being prepared for launch in a couple years will look for a signature that matches, within a range, the signature of earth. The comparison signature of earth has already been obtained by deep space satellite. The main elements of the signature are oxygen atmosphere and some water vapor. The oxygen atmosphere alone would be a strong indicator.

That is such an interesting phrase. What would happen if something came along that was not 'life as we know it'?

'life as we now know it'

As far as I know, it's mostly "Your Tax Dollars at Work", but RA would know better.

Bad, bad, bad idea. Simple reason: biocompatibility. You have no idea what's in that flesh. It might not even be muscle tissue like we understand it. Nor may it even be something digestible or even have any nutrients. It would be like eating mushrooms you see in the wild. The array of biochemicals in there could be extremely toxic. Or the germs and bugs on it could tear you apart because of your total lack of immunity. One example of this premise was HG Wells 'War of the Worlds' - bioincompatibility killed the Martiams. They were technologically more advanced, but forget about basic biology. They had no resistance to microorganisms here.
