"When I was a kid there was a possum being a pest that one of the folks shot. Then they discovered it was a momma possum and had baby possums. So they went and raised the baby possums and let them go. It never made sense to me.

Did any of the possums they raised come back to be pests? For every possum you see, there are dozens you will never see and which won't do you any harm.
I think being upset with the possum was a passing fad for the individuals involved. I left there and don't know if any came back.
It just didn't make sense to me to kill it and then raise a litter more of em.
But then a lot of things in life don't make sense to me.....
