Rommel committed 'suicide' (with some 'encouragement' from Hitler) in october 1944. There was some talk that he had agreed to become supreme commander of the armed forces if the plot to kill Hitler and replace the Nazi government had succeeded in july 1944. SS General Dietrich had already assured Rommel that SS troops would follow Rommels commands in that case, not Himmlers.
