Who knows -- maybe it goes back to the days of the Barbary pirates

If you think about it, the distrust probably goes back AT LEAST to the crusades. Hell AQ STILL brings that up.

Yes, that's true for their distrust of the western world. However, their distrust specifically of the USA probably began with the Barbary pirates.

Personally, I'm not in the least bit troubled by their distrust of us, because as far as I'm concerned the feeling's mutual.
