Well, I don't want this to become one of those MD4Bush threads, but I heard from a high-ranking Republican Party official from Palm Beach County that the local party officials have known for years about Foley's same-sex orientation but that it has never been an issue with them. That's as may be, but I think that it could very well be an issue among conservative Democrats in North Florida and among Republicans throughout the state (he has often voted for special rights for gays), and those are the votes we need to defeat Bill Nelson.
The sad part is that almost every time we've sent (either knowingly or unknowingly) a Gay GOPer to Congress, it's usually resulted in disaster (either disastrous votes (Jim Kolbe), or engaging in personally destructive behavior that leads to their downfall - like Bob Bauman of MD or Jon Hinson of MS). Try bringing up the name Jon Hinson to any Mississippi GOPer active in the past 20 years and you get a visceral reaction like no other.
