Kennedy has certainly changed HIS position on abortion. In 1971 he was adamently AGAINST it.So was Durbin and several other Democrats. NARAL, etc got to them.

I think maybe when birth control was still on the table they were all saying "Oh, of course this isn't a slippery slope, you're being silly, of course this doesn't mean that legalized abortion is next..."
