CHICAGO, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Though Apple Computer has reported remarkable success with its iPod -- sales rose by 250 percent during the last fiscal year -- there is some competition coming this week for the developer of the world's most famous, legitimate music downloading network, experts tell United Press International's Networking.
The rivalry, moreover, is not approaching from Asian consumer electronics pioneers Sony or Samsung. You almost sound just a tad hostile. Let me be clear: I'm not trying to razz ppl who like Ipods. I am not saying they are good or bad. I really am just trying to understand what they are all about. Obviously, they have become nearly ubiquitous. My impression was that it's an mp3 player, and if so, I am trying to understand why it's taken off so mightily compared to similar products by other companies. For all I know, it slices bread. So I'm just asking. I'm not copping any 'tude about it.
Anyway, every year at about this time, they have the CES show and everybody starts yapping about the iPod killers. Not going to happen. Apple sold something like 30 million of the things last year and they are going to sell 90 million this year. This is a juggernaut that cannot be stopped. Resist while you still can!
ha! yer funny. Ok, it's a convenient to operate mp3 player. I guess that answers my question anyway.
Basically, ease of use. The whole legal download thing, after all the Napster lawsuits. The fact that your songs don't disappear if you quit paying the $7.95 per month or whatever (like some subscription services do). The fact that you can use it like another hard disk. The fact that it plays video. The one-thumb interface.
I have had other mp3 players. I got an ipod 30gig after Christmas, and I have to say that the functionality of it, the thumbwheel, the interface with the computer (even with USB 1.1). The sound is better than other mp3s. The components seem better (the earphone jack, for example seems sturdier). The seemless connection with itunes, making it easier to download to the ipod. For me, the video capabilities and podcast connection with ipod and itunes is superlative. I am no Mac fan, but this thing works, works well, sounds good and it just high quality in your hand.

I seldom use my ipod with headphones. Maybe at home in bed while online with the laptop. At work I have a speaker set that lets me dock with the ipod. In the car I use a cassette adapter that I sometimes use with XM radio, or switch out with the ipod. The video is way cool. This from a 48 year old guy... But I may be weird... a conservative who drives a Prius...for the gadgets.
That look neat! I may just consider getting one of those. I got one of the first generation mp3 players back in 2001 when I was still in college (only holds 128MB), but I've been holding out from the whole IPod craze. It's too trendy for me.
The new pastor at my church is like you. He has done that with all of his classical CDs as well.

Same here... My "objection" to MP3's is simply the format, which, while it compresses the music just fine allowing for more songs stored on a device, the loss of music quality is too much for me to stand..
I still get upset over CD vs. Vinyl LP, because I know how much is lost by moving from analog to digital format..
Then you add the losses in quality for MP3..
That puts you in the .01% of the population. Not saying it's bad, just that these things are obviously not made for you, or your buddy. For the rest of the 99.99% of us, they(MP3 players) are great.
yeah, my MP3 player is great! i didnt just buy it on a whim...I too was holding out because of the iPod craze. My friend got the same Samsung MP3 player back in June or July, whenever it first came out, and his is still going strong, and he swears the battery life lasts forever! (though I havent had it long enough to drain it, I've used it a few hours a day for the past two days and its still at full-charge)
The FM tuner reception is surprisingly good, as is the voice recording.
On one website, I read that their slogan for the little thing is "It would be even smaller if it wasn't for the battery!"
One more thing. It feels very durable despite its tiny size. When I first looked at the thing, I thought I would break it. Also, the clip is pretty heavy-duty, and I'm all about quality!

I bought a Creative mp3 player last year. It was cheap, the interface isn't very good, but I can control it from my computer. No remote control or anything. I have an fm radio transmitter for it but it didn't work very well. I think it was for the iPod.
I still have 40GB of storage and it plays just fine. It's going to be my main source of music in my home when I get my stereo hooked up. I think the FM transmitter will work well inside the house. Then I can control all from the computer.
That an impressive collection! I'd imagine that most are ripped from CDs you've accumulated over an extended period of time. I wonder if anyone has actually loaded up an iPod with downloaded tunes at $0.99 apiece? $5,643.00 would be one heck of an investment in music.
